Ingredients

  • Beef - Lean Ground 450 g

  • Onion 2 sm

  • Egg 1

  • Salt 3 ml

  • Pepper 3 ml

  • Nutmeg 4 ml

  • Anise - Ground 8 ml

  • Kiezer Bun 4

  • Dill Pickles 2

  • Bacon 6 strips

  • Tomato 1 lg

  • Cheese - Gruyere 80 g

  • Lettuce - Leaf 3 leaves

  • Mayonnaise 30 ml

  • Red Pepper Jelly 30 ml

  • Bread Crumbs 50 ml

Preparation

These can be BBQ'ed as shown here, or pan fried on a medium to medium high burner.

I suggested condiments in the shopping list - but feel free to substitute if you like. I use home made Red Pepper Jelly. If you're interested in me doing a show on how to make it drop me an email through the contact button.

  1. Optional - Condiment:On a medium burner set a frying pan. When warm add the bacon and cook until the desired crispiness reached. Set aside.
  2. If BBQ'ing start the charcoal or gas.
  3. Peel, slice and chop the onions finely. Use a food processor if desired.
  4. Put the meat in a bowl, add the chopped onions, egg, anise, nutmeg, bread crumbs, and salt and pepper. Mix well with your hand or a spoon.
  5. Form the meat into patties by pinching a small handful from the mixed meat and pat flat between your hands, then forming one hand like a cup gently squeeze the edges so they are smooth. Repeat for the remaining meat.
  6. Clean your work surface the slice the tomatoes, cheese and pickles. Get other condiments out.
  7. If BBQ'ing brush your grill with a steel brush just before cooking (it's easier when the grill is hot) then brush with oil before placing the patties on the grill.
  8. Flip the burgers according to the heat of the grill. Ideally you only need to do this 2 or 3 times, but with charcoal especially you can get hot spots so moving the burgers and flipping is more common. Expect to cook about 12 - 15 minutes total.
  9. Put the burgers on a clean plate, clean the grill again with a steel brush then toast the Kaisers.
10. Assemble the burger according to your taste.
